When Greg Oden Went Down...

When Greg Oden went down, all twenty thousand Blazer fans in attendance thought the same thing: "Oh, shit. We're fucked." When the big man crumpled to the floor, the team instantly became a non-factor in this year's playoff race. Brandon Roy morphed back into a volume shooter. Andre Miller's playing time became a non-issue. The Sam Bowie label stuck. And Kevin Pritchard kicked himself again for not choosing Kevin Durant.

Realistically, this could be the last we see of Oden. We're talking about a guy who previously destroyed his other knee getting off his couch. He's like Samuel Jackson's character in Unbreakable. It seems improbable that he'll ever be sturdy enough to play professional sports. If you're Pritchard, do you resign Oden to big money after this season knowing how fragile he is? Hell, no. If Oden does eventually come back, it probably won't be in a Blazer uniform.

It's a sad day for Portland fans any way you look at it. No way this team competes for a title without Oden. No way. In fact, it's entirely possible they drop out of the playoff race altogether. Without Nic Batum, Charles Outlaw AND Oden, they're forced to rely on suspect talent like Juwan Howard, Jerryd Bayless and Dante Cunningham. Get ready for a long winter.

NOTE: meant to say 'Travis Outlaw' (not 'Charles') in paragraph above. Thanks to my legion of aggro fact checkers in the comments below. LOL.

Haha, yeah it's the perfect comparison. I'm definitely disappointed since he was putting in work on my fantasy team

Wow, it's sad to see, I feel for the big fella, but shit, it's not like we called him Greg Olden because he looks like a youngster.

Joel and Stu (Really Joel) just made the Sam Bowie comparison at about the 9 minute mark of the 3rd.

I think Oden is destined to end up as one of the NBA's biggest what if scenarios. He was a tremendous talent coming out of high school, but it doesnt seem like he can stay healthy, and will probably never become a dominant center in the league.

@rakeback: welcome to the boards

@various anonymous douchebags: fuck off. if you don't like my blog, don't read it.

if you don't like criticism, don't spout your swill in a public forum. pretty sure i've read this same article 50 times already anyway. so you're saying they should've taken durant, that oden's career parallels walton's and bowie's? (here's a new angle for you: sabonis and jermaine o'neal were blazer picks too, and they never produced for the team the way they could have. now let's really probe this "curse.") wow, insightful. nice try pontificating, hack.

@kevin: I'll spout my swill in your mom's mouth

CHARLES Outlaw?

At least you didn't call him BO Outlaw.

Idiot.

I thought that was a pun on T. Outlaw that you left the name Charles in there...I'm a Blazer fan and I thought that was pretty funny. Hard luck for the big fella, but I know he'll be back. What's he gonna do cut and run? He has a great passion for the game, just met him at a mentoring function. It's terrible but just like he said, a setback. He does need to get some Ewing knee pads though!

Hi, Rev. Nothing would make me happier than seeing Oden play a full season. If you're Portland, do you shell out big money to keep him after the season, though? Somebody else will make him an offer, guaranteed.

Okay guys, shut the fuck up. Everyone makes mistakes. Who gives a damn if he wrote Charles? Don't need to make a big deal out of it. What do any of you guys do? Do you have a popular blog on the internet and actually have a life and dont pay attention to the smallest mistakes just to be a smart ass. Fuck off. KneeJerkNBA is the best

Thanks, Josh. I'm especially fond of the asshole who said he's never heard of Charles Outlaw.

Come on people ya it sucked to see Greg go down but who got us to the playoffs last year? I know Greg looks like he's 50 but he's still a young kid with alot of time left. Nothing is ever good enough, first he was called a flop because he got into big foul trouble but look at Yao Ming he was the same his first couple seasons, and now he's a flop because he gets hurt to much but look at Bynum and how he's come back. Give Greg and the rest of the team a break because everyone is complaining about someone. Greg, Brandon, LA, Outlaw, Andre, Rudy whoever. Be fans and SUPPORT the team just like they say we do. This is my team and I wouldn't trade any of them

Hi, Jeremy. Welcome to the boards. It's commendable that you're defending your Blazers. But this isn't about bashing Oden. Or making trade suggestions. My point was that the team is in a tough place now. Knowing that Oden is beyond injury prone, do they fork over big money to keep him? Would you?
