The Seattle Sonics (remember them?) were intrigued enough by his rebounding prowess to trade for him. Cage played six progressively less productive seasons with Seattle before bouncing around with Cleveland, Philly and Jersey. He never came close to matching his numbers with that dreadful Clipper shipwreck.
David Lee just finished his fourth season with the hapless New York Knicks, who were so desperate for rebounding that they were starting the 6'9 PF at center. In his first three seasons combined, Lee started 55 games. This past year, he started 74. His numbers? 16 and 11.7. On a team that won 32 games and finished in last place.
Lee's agent is trying to get him 12 mil a year. But these ain't Isiah's Knicks anymore. Walsh knows better. The team's offering a one-year deal, which is the equivalent of saying, "Bail us out for another year until we can get somebody better."
Many Knick fans are rushing to Lee's defense, pointing out his league-leading number of double-doubles last season, while ignoring the fact that he got absolutely torched on defense. These rabid fans even go so far as to suggest that he's an All-Star.
Lee's no All-Star. He's a role player- a rebounder- just like Dale Davis, Rick Mahorn, Tyrone Hill, PJ Brown and Michael Cage before him. Except without the defense. And in Cage's case, the awesome Jheri Curl.

And then there's the issue of pigmentation...
Yeah, this is what a Jheri Curl looks like on a white dude (Sikma):

Lee's a nice player. I can understand the 1 year deal since they have at least 2 studs coming in next year.
I appreciate him being one of the league's better rebounders and a hustler, despite being physically overmatched every game. He's 6-9 going against dudes 7-0 and up, and putting up gaudy numbers on the boards. He's more than a role player.
Ryan
Hi, Ryan. Welcome to the boards.
We'll see where Lee is in five years. On a contender, he'll be getting benched for that defense.
Agreed, Andrew Bynum gets a little more than that kind of money and he's looked at as the future of the Laker Franchise. Lee is a rebounder with no perimeter game. not a franchise player.
NY keeping that cap space clear, they only have eddy curry's money on the table for 2010.
*mainly curry's
also jared jeffries, jordan hill and toney douglas.
@RBTL: I was cricical of Bynum's deal until that amazing stretch in January right before he got hurt. Dude went nuts. 42 points against the Clippers. 6 blocks against Charlotte. Double digit rebounds five games in a row.
Well it's still fair to be critical of him, with the knee healthy this year, he'll def have no excuses.
and yes, ricky davis, god, what a bad player.
Great comparison. Lee may not have Cage's Jheri Curl, but he does have a pretty sick white man's fro. Shout out to James Caan in Godfather.
@Patrick: Sonny Corleone was a bad motherfucker. "You touch my sister again and I'll kill you."
yeah, I don't get the big dollar demands. Scola would have put up the same numbers on this years knicks. And he plays d.
@WW: don't sleep on Scola. He might look like the world's ugliest woman but he can ball.
LOL. Funny you should say that, because I pointed out scola to my wife during the playoffs and we both agreed his face is a carbon copy of the lady who lives next door to us. You can't make this stuff up.
I used to have nightmares about boxing out between A.C. Green and Michael Cage and getting so lubed up with activator that the pressure of the boxout shot me into the cheap seats. I agree about Lee, he's a role player sucking up rebounds on a team with an effort-vacuum. Bynum should have a good year as long as he has no health issues. Right now, I think he needs to improve his D so he can avoid early foul trouble. Go Lakers!
LOL. Ben, you are on fire! Love the Green/Cage lube sandwich AND the 'effort-vacuum.'
Please post more often.
I shit you not, I used to wake up in a cold sweat in High School and I'd check my PJ's for brown activator stains.
a different kind of P.J. Brown.
no more Shitbury in Boston!
